FastIDE A1200 Adapter

Hardware

Installation

1. Power off the computer.

2. Taking usual anti-static precautions, Open the case and identify the Gayle IC on the main board, labelled U5.

3. Using a soft cloth wet with isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits, (denatured alcohol) firmly clean the metal pins of Gayle (U5) on all four sides. Failure to clean these pins can result in an unreliable connection with the FastIDE adapter, causing unexpected or unreliable operation.

4. Locate the 84-pin PLCC socket of the FastIDE adapter above Gayle. The 10-way connector and On/Off jumper must be pointing directly at the PCMCIA connector, and the AmigaKit logo at the front edge of the adapter will be nearest the front edge of the Amiga 1200 main board.

IMPORTANT:

If FastIDE is installed with the incorrect connector rotation, permanent damage to FastIDE and the Amiga 1200 main board may result!

5. Support the main board from below and firmly press down on the centre of the FastIDE adapter. Use a soft cloth to protect your hand from the solder joints on the board.

6. Once clipped into place, avoid removing the FastIDE adapter unnecessarily from Gayle, as the connector has a limited number of connection cycles, causing the connection to become less reliable.

7. Using the supplied 10-way cable connect the 10-way header on the FastIDE adapter to the 10-way header on the 4xIDE Buffered Interface. The red stripe on the cable indicates the pin 1 side. The connector has a polarising tab to prevent it being connected incorrectly.

IMPORTANT:

Do not connect the 10-way header to anything else except the Amiga Kit A1200/A600 4xIDE Buffered Interface or permanent damage may result!

8. At this point, check the computer boots normally. With the On/Off jumper set to the On position, the IDE transfer mode defaults to PIO4 which may not be compatible with very old hard drives. Set the jumper to Off which enables PIO0 at power on for compatibility with older hard drives. The transfer mode can be over-ridden at boot time by altering the preference, refer to the software setup instructions for details.

9. If the computer boots as expected, other options can be connected as needed:

RESET This two-way header connects to an external reset switch on a tower case. The polarity of the connector is not important providing the wiring of the external reset switch is not shared by anything else.

PCMCIA LED The two-way header connects to an external LED to indicate when the PCMCIA interface is being accessed by the system for read or write. The polarity is important, the anode of the LED (usually a red wire) aligns with the + symbol.

A14/A15 These two address line connections can be used to connect to the Amiga Kit 4-way clock port expander instead of using the 'ROM adapter' socket. Refer to the 4-way clock port expander instructions for connection details, or contact Amiga Kit for advice.
